My semester abroad in Seattle
My semester abroad in Seattle was an inspiring and enriching experience that helped me grow both academically and personally. My time in this city opened up new perspectives on studying, life, and interacting with different cultures.
Studying in Seattle is significantly different from what I was used to in Germany. One of the most notable differences was the system of weekly assignments, which I found far more enjoyable and effective than the German model, where a single exam at the end of the semester often determines the grade. Regular assignments and projects kept me consistently engaged in the learning process, which not only enhanced my progress but also significantly reduced the stress at the end of the semester. The interactive courses, which heavily incorporated group work and discussions, made learning even more engaging and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the material. Moreover, I had small classes, which further enriched the experience. The smaller group sizes gave us the opportunity to ask more questions, dive deeper into discussions, and collaboratively work through problems.
Seattle as a city impressed me from the very beginning. The combination of nature and urban life is truly unique. The short drive to the mountains, countless parks, the sea, and the vibrant city itself make Seattle an extraordinary place. I was particularly grateful to live slightly south of the city center near Seward Park. This quiet neighborhood, with its green spaces and close proximity to Lake Washington, provided the perfect balance to the often bustling city center. This peaceful environment helped me quickly feel at home and better focus on the challenges of studying. Also, I brought my dog with me to Seattle, and I have to say that this city is one of the most dog-friendly places I have ever been to. From numerous off-leash dog parks to pet-friendly cafes and shops, Seattle truly welcomes dogs as part of the community.
A particular highlight of my stay in Seattle was the cultural diversity I experienced. Thanks to the many international students and the openness of the locals, I connected with people from all over the world and broadened my horizons. I also enjoyed trying international restaurants, which was a nice way to experience the city’s multicultural community. Seattle is not only rich in natural beauty but also impressive for its economic significance. The proximity to globally renowned companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Boeing was especially fascinating to me. Knowing that these major players have their headquarters in Seattle expanded my view of career opportunities and inspired me to consider international options.
Of course, leisure time was also an essential part of my experience. Seattle and its surroundings offer countless opportunities for outings and adventures. Some of my fondest memories include day trips to Mount Rainier National Park, hikes in the stunning landscapes of Olympic National Park or Mount Baker, and visits to charming places like Leavenworth. Everyday life in the city also brought unforgettable moments, from visiting the Space Needle to walking along the waterfront and exploring neighborhoods like Capitol Hill or Fremont.
My semester abroad in Seattle has transformed my perspective on studying and life. I’ve learned how important it is to stay open to new experiences and cultures and how much I can benefit from these interactions. The balance between nature and urban life, the cultural diversity, and the academic structure make Seattle an inspiring place that will always hold a special place in my heart. I am incredibly grateful for this time and would wholeheartedly recommend a semester abroad with World of Students in Seattle to anyone seeking an inspiring and enriching experience.
