Funding & Scholarships

You are planning a semester abroad during your studies? Or would you like to complete a full degree abroad? Then you will have to think about funding sooner or later. Especially in English-speaking countries, costs for academics are substantially higher than in Europe. But don’t panic – there are several different options to get financial support for your adventure abroad – within the EU as well as internationally. However, it is advisable to start planning as early as possible. The following paragraphs outline some helpful information to give you an overview of these diverse financial options to make your dream of studying abroad come true.

Internal scholarships of universities/higher education institutions

European higher education institutions / universities often provide internal scholarships for studies abroad. One of the ones offered in Germany is the PROMOS Scholarship. For the PROMOS program, every German university receives scholarships for studies abroad from the International Office or “Akademisches Auslandsamt”. These scholarships fund study abroad semesters between one and six months, whereas rates may vary depending on the destination.
If you are interested in studying within the EU, the ERASMUS+ scholarship is a great alternative. This funding is open to all students of any study program and academic institution. While you do not have to pay tuition fees abroad, you will additionally receive a monthly funding up to 450 Euro. The exact amount depends on the country. It is also interesting to know that Erasmus+ scholarships are combinable with BAföG and several other scholarships.
Simultaneous funding from Erasmus+ or PROMOS and HAW.International are however excluded. HAW.International offers funding for studies abroad as part of a degree thesis for up to six months. Eligible for these scholarships are students of all study programs in a Bachelor’s, Master’s and “Diplom” at German universities of applied sciences (HAW and FH).
If you are interested in applying to any of the above-mentioned scholarships, we recommend contacting your home institution directly. For any information regarding the application process, feel free to contact the International Office or the Erasmus+ Coordinator at your university.

Scholarship

Funding of studies abroad or semesters abroad are also possible through scholarships. Scholarships are a great alternative for students who are not eligible for Auslands-BAföG and cannot take out a student loan. Since scholarships for studies abroad do not have to be refunded, they are quite popular for students. The criteria for awarding scholarships vary greatly; while academic achievement is often taken into the selection procedure, this is not always the case and mostly not the sole determining factor. Each organization, association and foundation awards their scholarships in different ways, so we recommend contacting them directly for further information.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is a globally operating organization, which fosters international exchange for students and researchers. The extensive variety of scholarships differs in terms of requirements respectively. DAAD financial assistance is awarded as yearly or short-term scholarships for studies abroad to students of all study programs, including PhD. There are also some scholarship options for selected bachelor’s or master’s degrees.
The following link forwards you to the DAAD website, which provides you with more information about their diverse scholarships and funding options.

Scholarships of German foundations

In Germany, there are several foundations which offer support to students going abroad just like you. Apart from the financial bonus, foundation scholarships also enable you to participate in lectures or seminars and therewith establish ties to international networks. The following websites provide you with a broad overview of possible foundation scholarships:http://www.stifterverband.de/, http://www.stiftungen.org/

KfW Student Loans

If you are neither eligible for BAföG nor were granted a scholarship, you can finance your studies abroad through a student loan.
The German market leader for student loans is the credit institution “KfW”. The well-established loan to finance your studies is the “KfW-Studienkredit”, which can either be requested directly at the KfW bank or through other providers.
Most of the private banks (e.g. Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Hypo Vereinsbank, etc.) convey the KfW student loan for studies abroad instead of their own academic or educational loans. Further information about the KfW student loan can be found here: https://www.kfw.de/About-KfW/ .

Auslands-BAföG

The AuslandsBAföG funding is awarded by the German government to support studies abroad. AuslandBAföG can definitely be claimed if you have also received InlandsBAföG; however, this is not a requirement. If you do not collect InlandsBAföG, you could still be eligible to receive AuslandsBAföG, because of the higher subsidy rates. The following prerequisites must be met in order to obtain the AuslandsBAföG financial aid:

  • German citizenship (or affiliation to another group as stated in §8 BAföG)
  • It is not necessary to have studied in Germany before studying abroad in an EU country. However, for studies abroad outside of the EU, students must have successfully completed at least one year of their studies in Germany to be eligible for the funding
  • The duration of the education abroad comprises between 12 weeks and a maximum of one year

There is no restriction for a maximum duration of a semester abroad within the EU. Outside of the EU, studying abroad will only be funded for up to one year. For special circumstances, the duration may extend for up to two and a half years. Full degrees are only financed through BAföG within the EU. Students interested in a full degree outside of the EU are not eligible for AuslandsBAföG. The scope of AuslandsBAföG benefits generally depend on the destination as well the income of the applicants and their parents. Further information regarding the criteria to receive subsidy, the application process as well as the exceptions can be found on the websites of the German Ministry of Edcuation and Research.
