Scholarships

Funding of studies abroad or semesters abroad are also possible through scholarships. Scholarships are a great alternative for students who are not eligible for Auslands-BAföG and cannot take out a student loan. Since scholarships for studies abroad do not have to be refunded, they are quite popular for students. The criteria for awarding scholarships vary greatly; while academic achievement is often taken into the selection procedure, this is not always the case and mostly not the sole determining factor. Each organization, association and foundation awards their scholarships in different ways, so we recommend contacting them directly for further information.

Internal scholarships of universities/higher education institutions

European higher education institutions / universities often provide internal scholarships for studies abroad. One of the ones offered in Germany is the PROMOS Scholarship. For the PROMOS program, every German university receives scholarships for studies abroad from the International Office or “Akademisches Auslandsamt”. These scholarships fund study abroad semesters between one and six months, whereas rates may vary depending on the destination.
If you are interested in studying within the EU, the ERASMUS+ scholarship is a great alternative. This funding is open to all students of any study program and academic institution. While you do not have to pay tuition fees abroad, you will additionally receive a monthly funding up to 450 Euro. The exact amount depends on the country. It is also interesting to know that Erasmus+ scholarships are combinable with BAföG and several other scholarships.
Simultaneous funding from Erasmus+ or PROMOS and HAW.International are however excluded. HAW.International offers funding for studies abroad as part of a degree thesis for up to six months. Eligible for these scholarships are students of all study programs in a Bachelor’s, Master’s and “Diplom” at German universities of applied sciences (HAW and FH).
If you are interested in applying to any of the above-mentioned scholarships, we recommend contacting your home institution directly. For any information regarding the application process, feel free to contact the International Office or the Erasmus+ Coordinator at your university.
