My semester abroad in a world metropolis
Studying and living in the Big Apple
In spring, a semester abroad at St. Francis College (SFC) in Brooklyn, NY, gave me the opportunity of exploring the "center of the world". I was attracted to improve my language skills, but also by the city's cultural diversity and leisure activities. In addition, St. Francis College offers a wide range of study programs in various disciplines such as humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, business, health sciences, education and many more.
Since the college is not a partner university of mine here in Germany, I had to organize the semester abroad myself, which was easier than I thought. I got in touch with World of Students through my university and have nothing but positive things to say. They not only took care of the entire organization but are also very experienced and in close contact with the foreign universities. All I had to do was to compile the necessary documents and send them to World of Students. They were also able to help me with finding an accommodation outside the college and funding options.
When I arrived in New York, I had the predictable culture shock by being confronted with the incredible size and speed of the city. Thousands of people from all over the world pass through the city every day. As a result, there are countless restaurants serving food from all over the world. The big skyscrapers are fascinating because of their abstract size and the technological advances make it easy to adapt to the urban lifestyle.
St. Francis College is a private college with a small campus and a very central location. It is located near the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn Heights. Manhattan is only a few minutes away by subway. In general, I think New York City is a great place to study because it's easy and affordable to get around by subway. St. Francis College has recently moved to a new campus which is compact and has modern facilities such as laboratories, libraries and computer centers.
The college also has a dormitory near Brooklyn Bridge, about a 20-minute walk from the college. From there, you have a great view of Manhattan, as the dormitory is located right next to the water. However, for personal reasons I was looking for accommodation myself and had the opportunity to stay in an apartment in Manhattan. Therefore, I cannot say much about the St. Francis College Residence Hall. However, New York offers a wide range of student accommodation, and it is definitely worth looking around outside your own college's Residence Hall.
St. Francis College is known for its small class sizes, which allows students to develop close relationships with their professors. You should be prepared for quizzes and exams throughout the semester, as well as presentations and assignments. There is also a lot of emphasis on collaboration and discussion in class and group work. However, the professors are all very supportive and take a great interest in their students. Due to the small size of the classes, the professors know all their students by name, which made me feel integrated very quickly.
The college has a diverse student body, which encourages cultural exchange, and the students were all very helpful and it was very interesting to interact with them. All in all, I really enjoyed the atmosphere at St. Francis College. All international students are very welcome and contribute a lot to the culture of the college. There are many events where you can meet other students. I also had a positive experience with the local study organization. The Office of International Student Services specializes in the needs and questions of international students and advises them on immigration issues as well as personal, social, and cultural matters.
Since I only had classes three days a week, I had plenty of time to explore New York City. Together with a friend, we took advantage of all the different things the city has to offer. From eating out and sightseeing to visiting museums and shopping, we did it all. During spring break, we used our free time to fly to Los Angeles and explore the city of the rich and famous. But you don't necessarily have to travel to the other end of the US to see other cities. For example, we also visited the capital, Washington D.C., which is a three-hour bus ride from New York.
I gained a lot of impressions and new experiences during my semester, and I can recommend everyone to take the opportunity to spend their semester abroad at St. Francis College.
