Ciao Roma - Study Abroad Semester at the Università Europea di Roma
My Preparations and Arrival in Rome
My decision to spend my semester abroad in Rome was made early on. On the one hand, I have family ties to Italy; on the other hand, I had already attended a language school there a year ago, where I learned the basics of the Italian language. Rome was therefore not only a logical but also an emotional choice. The city combines history, culture, and joie de vivre in a unique way – and for the winter semester, it was especially important to me to study in a mild climate. I am also fascinated by Italy’s cultural diversity, which varies strongly from region to region.
The Università Europea di Roma particularly convinced me because it appears very modern and offers a wide range of courses that fit perfectly with my degree program in Business Psychology. In addition to business and psychology modules, a language course is also offered – a feature that was especially important to me, as this is not something all universities provide. In the long term, I can also imagine pursuing a career in Italy, which is why building academic and linguistic foundations here on site is very important to me.
I applied early in 2025, in February, through my home university, by submitting a motivation letter and my documents via the World of Students website. The application process was straightforward, and with the support of World of Students, the planning – from course selection to insurance and housing – was very well organized. Particularly helpful was the continuous contact with the WOS coordinators, who reliably assisted with every question.
Since I already have Italian language skills at level A2, I try to speak as much Italian as possible in daily life. My goal during the stay is to reach level B2 or even C1. The courses at the UER are held in English (from B2 onwards, you can also take them in Italian). However, communication is not an issue in everyday life, as many people in Rome speak English. Still, locals truly appreciate when you make the effort to speak Italian – it opens doors and leads to many friendly encounters.
I was very fortunate with my housing search since I was able to find accommodation through personal connections. In general, finding housing in Rome can be challenging, as prices are very high and you often get less quality for the rent than in major German cities. The UER offers verified housing options on its website – these are usually more expensive but also safer. Many students also search via Facebook groups, which is cheaper but riskier. It is important to always sign a written rental contract and avoid paying excessively high deposits, as these are not always refunded. Recommended neighborhoods close to the university include Termini, Trastevere, Monteverde, Valle Aurelia, and the area around Vatican City.
Another important organizational step is applying for the Codice Fiscale, an Italian tax and identification number needed for rental contracts but also for the monthly public transport ticket (ATAC). You can apply for it before arrival at the Italian consulate or the Italian Foreign Ministry office in Germany – this saves a lot of bureaucracy on site.
Rome immediately captivated me: the people are warm, the food and coffee are excellent, and you quickly meet both international and Italian students. The style of the people is elegant, and the atmosphere of the city is inspiring. However, one should keep in mind that organizational processes here are sometimes less strict than in Germany – but with patience and openness, this is easy to handle. Packing was actually a bit of a challenge, as you need clothing for summer, autumn, and winter for the winter semester – but temperatures remain much milder than in Germany.
Overall, I am very happy with my decision. I feel well supported at the UER, I settled in quickly, and I look forward to the coming months to deepen my language skills, make new friends, and immerse myself even more in the Italian way of life.
