Study Abroad Semester in New York City – Political Science at St. Francis College

My name is Gabriel Meyer-Hübner and I am a Bachelor’s student of Political Science at the University of Rostock with a minor in Communication and Media Studies. As part of my degree program, I completed a study abroad semester at St. Francis College in New York City. My stay lasted from late August to late December and, in retrospect, it was one of the most formative experiences of my academic journey so far.

At St. Francis College, I completed a traditional study abroad semester in the field of Political Science. In total, I took four courses, which were later recognized as two modules at my home university in Germany. The credit transfer process was arranged in advance through a Learning Agreement, making the administrative procedures very straightforward.

The courses I attended were American National Government, Human Rights, Political Communication, and Propaganda and Persuasion. My favorite course was Political Communication, as it closely connected theoretical concepts with current political developments and media-related examples from the United States. Class discussions played a central role, and the courses were generally very interactive.

Compared to my experience in Germany, the academic workload at St. Francis College felt slightly more relaxed. Classes took place four times a week and were accompanied by regular assignments, homework, and preparatory readings. At the same time, examinations and assessments were well structured and graded fairly.

My decision to study in New York City was very deliberate. New York is not only one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, but also a major political, media, and cultural hub. Especially for students of Political Science, the city offers a unique environment in which political processes, media dynamics, international organizations, and social debates are highly visible and tangible.

St. Francis College particularly appealed to me because of its location in Brooklyn and its practice-oriented approach to political science education. The relatively small class sizes allowed for in-depth discussions and close interaction with professors. This combination of academic quality and location made the college the ideal choice for my study abroad semester.

My university dormitory was located in Brooklyn Heights, a very attractive and centrally located neighborhood. Despite the high cost of living, the dormitory provided an excellent opportunity to quickly connect with other students. My social life was largely shaped by the international student community, while I also had regular contact with American classmates.

New York offers almost unlimited leisure opportunities. In addition to sightseeing and museum visits, I attended numerous sporting events, including NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, and WWE events. Traveling outside the city, such as visiting Washington, D.C. and Niagara Falls, were among the highlights of my stay.

A study abroad semester in New York comes with organizational and financial challenges that require good preparation. Early financial planning is essential. I also strongly recommend being open toward other students and actively participating in social and cultural activities throughout the city.

My study abroad semester in New York was one of the best times of my life. I gained valuable academic knowledge, developed new perspectives, and formed friendships that will last well beyond my stay. I can wholeheartedly recommend a study abroad semester in New York.
