My journey to New York

Planning, Preparations, and First Impressions

For many years, I had the desire to live in New York. For me, it was more than just a travel destination – it was a real dream that I absolutely wanted to make come true. In the fall of 2024, I discovered the opportunity through World of Students, and suddenly everything felt within reach. From that moment on, it was clear: I would do everything possible to make it happen.

Of course, the preparation was not always easy. The topic of visas, in particular, occupied my mind for quite some time. When there were discussions about potential restrictions, the uncertainty was significant. I was lucky that my appointment in Berlin was still scheduled before the changes, but the organization with all the documents, traveling to Berlin, and waiting for approval was exciting and, to be honest, nerve-wracking. Holding my passport with the completed visa in my hand was an incredible moment.

In addition, there were countless things that needed to be organized in advance – more than you might initially think. From health insurance abroad to booking flights and finding accommodation, everything had to be arranged. Questions about currency exchange, SIM cards, or how to best navigate a new culture also occupied my mind. You quickly realize that a semester abroad is not just a study stay but a temporary move to a completely different country. This requires a lot of preparation, patience, and organization.

During this time, it was extremely helpful for me to always have a dedicated contact person at World of Students. Julia supported me with all my questions, whether about application documents, courses at SFC, or general uncertainties. Knowing that you can reach out to someone knowledgeable at any time who can help immediately made many things easier and gave me a sense of security.

AExchanging with other students who were also going to New York through World of Students was another great support. You quickly realize that you are not alone with your worries and questions – everyone goes through similar experiences, and you can give each other tips. This made the anticipation grow even more, even though the to-do list remained long.

The actual farewell in Germany was another big moment. Three suitcases, a head full of thoughts, many emotions, and then off to the plane. Now, after two weeks in New York, I am slowly realizing that all the stress was worth it.
