Ein Semester in der Stadt, die niemals schläft

A semester in the city that never sleeps

Hey, I am Viviane Sommer, 24 years old, doing my bachelor of Arts in Business Administration at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. I was able to spend my 6th semester abroad and decided to complete it in the US. I was thinking about and reading about numerous countries where I could spend my semester. After talking to my classmates, someone told me about St. Francis College in New York. Since that day, New York was always on my mind and I started researching information about the college and studying in the US. The college convinced me because it is small, offers dorms to life in and being located in Brooklyn, it’s not too crowed or hectic. In addition, the communication with WoS and the College was extremely good which reinforced my decision. I was assigned a personal advisor who guided me through the application process. They reviewed all the necessary documents, submitted them on my behalf and ensured that everything was completed correctly and on time. Their assistance was especially valuable when it came to applying for my student visa. The team was knowledgeable, patient and ready to answer every question I had.

St. Francis is a modern college with a beautiful view of Brooklyn and caring community. I enrolled in four classes, two online and two in person. My favorite class was a business class where I had a very competent and committed professor. Furthermore, after every class I had assignments for the week with small tasks about the lecture or reading material. Having two group projects made the lectures diversified and interactive.

Besides studying, New York is a huge city with a lot to explore. When I arrived in January, I was definitely surprised by the warmth and friendliness people showed me. Even though everything is very fast in the city that never sleeps, people watch out for each other and take care. I really like the street infrastructure. Streets running horizontally have numbers that increase going south and going up walking uptown. Avenues are vertical and have numbers as well. This makes navigation very easy, even though in lower Manhattan and in some other parts of the city streets also have names. In general, I really liked the American mentality. Americans work very hard and are very focused on their goals. On the other hand, they are open-minded and always down for small friendly conversation.

My tips for living in New York are the following: be prepared to walk a lot and bring comfortable shoes. You will walk a lot, no matter the weather, no matter the temperature. Also, watch out not to walk too slow. Always bring a scarf. Even when the sun is shining, around the next corner a cold wind can always surprise you between the skyscrapers. Finally, when riding the subway, watch out if the train is going uptown or downtown, also check if it’s express or local train because express trains skip stops.

My highlights living in the big apple have been lower Manhattan with Rockefeller park. You have a beautiful view of New Jersey and can walk along the river side. Little bit more north of that is Chelsea and the Hudson Yards. Eating food at Chelsea market and walking over to pier 57 is definitely a must-do. Close by is the Highline, which was used by trains earlier, now you can walk above the streets in calm and relaxing atmosphere. Finally, a Highlight of mine is the Brooklyn bridge. Especially, in the morning when it’s not to crowed, you can have a relaxing walk and enjoy the view of the financial district and look towards midtown.

To put it in a nutshell, I can say that my time in New York has been truly unforgettable. Studying at St. Francis College gave me the chance to experience a different academic environment, meet new people from around the world and grow both professionally and personally. Living in one of the most vibrant cities on the planet challenged and inspired me every single day. From engaging lectures and insightful assignments to unforgettable walks through the city’s neighborhoods, this semester abroad has enriched my life in countless ways. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of American culture, built valuable international connections and developed a greater sense of independence. Looking back, choosing New York for my semester abroad was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I would do it all over again.
