One semester in the heart of Londons
Experiences at London South Bank University
One semester in London is coming to an end—and with it, an unforgettable time for me that has helped me grow tremendously both academically and personally.
At the beginning of the semester, there was an orientation organized by the Study Abroad Office, where I met all the other international students also doing a semester abroad. This was especially helpful, as it allowed me to make initial contacts before lectures even started—which also proved useful in my later courses. I can highly recommend London South Bank University. The main campus, including the LSBU Hub, was newly built or modernized in 2022—and you can notice it immediately. The library is excellently equipped, and there are numerous areas for studying and relaxing. I particularly appreciated the course structure: to receive full recognition of the German ECTS (30), you only need to take three modules. I chose Managing Products and Brands, Effective Business Negotiations, and Operations, Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
In addition to lectures, each module includes a seminar in the afternoon in small groups (around 30 students) as well as weekly online support sessions to clarify any open questions. The professors have extensive practical experience and a strong industry background. In all modules, the assessment consisted solely of a written submission of 3,000–4,000 words at the end of the semester—there were no traditional exams. I also particularly liked the central organization via the LSBU MyAccount app, which conveniently combines the timetable, emails, news, and other important information.
My free time was largely shaped by the offerings of LSBU Active, which includes all sports activities at the university. Since I stayed in one of the LSBU residence halls, I was able to use the modern gym free of charge at any time. I also pursued an old passion of mine: cheerleading. The university offers a wide variety of Sports Clubs (with mandatory training two to three times a week, e.g., rugby, netball, dance, or cheerleading) as well as Societies (optional activities one to two times a week, e.g., Pilates or Zumba). The annual fee is £80. Training was great and a perfect way to meet British students—which can otherwise be quite difficult outside of such activities.
Beyond that, London is an incredibly exciting city with endless things to do. I especially enjoyed Notting Hill, Soho, and Elephant & Castle—the neighborhood where my residence hall was located. On the Instagram page of World of Students, you can also check out my story takeover and several Instagram reels, for example from the LSBU Halloween party.
