Preparing for my semester abroad at London South Bank University

Ready for London

For a long time, I knew that I definitely wanted to do my semester abroad in England. Since this is associated with some challenges due to Brexit, I started researching various options intensively about a year before my planned stay, especially regarding funding, organization, and the question: Which university do I want to study at?

Through an information event at my home university, I became aware of World of Students. After a very pleasant and informative phone call, it quickly became clear to me that, with their support, I wanted to spend my semester abroad at London South Bank University (LSBU). The central location of the university as well as the diverse range of courses offered by the Business School immediately convinced me.

Throughout the entire preparation period, I was in close contact with Marisa, my contact person at World of Students, who connected me with the responsible staff at LSBU. Without this support, the time before my departure would certainly have been much more stressful. Fortunately, “single semester students” do not need a visa for the United Kingdom, as the stay is under six months. At the beginning of 2025, I applied directly via LSBU’s online portal and submitted all the required documents.

After that, I turned to the question of financing, since the tuition fees are quite high. I applied for several scholarships and was also able to rely on the support of my parents. Both the tuition fees and the rent for student housing had to be paid in full in advance. I knew that I wanted to live in one of the LSBU residence halls (centrally located and ideal for meeting new people). As a single semester student, I was eventually allocated a room in “Dante Road,” the oldest of the three residence halls, located only about a ten-minute walk from campus.

To complete my preparations, I also took care of my international health insurance and booked my flight to London. Even though this phase was very intense, I would do everything the same way again — with good planning and a bit of calm, everything can be managed well.

On 13 September 2025, I finally landed in London, moved into my student accommodation room, and now it is finally beginning: my exciting journey into the adventure of a semester abroad.
