Learning & Living in Kuala Lumpur

Review: My time at Asia Pacific University

Just do it! I thought long and hard about whether or not to do a second semester abroad. Looking back, I can say without a doubt that I don't regret this decision. The experiences and memories I gained during this time speak for themselves.

During my stay in Kuala Lumpur, I was not only able to check off many items on my personal bucket list (for example, participating in a marathon), but I also made incredibly valuable new friendships—friendships that will definitely last far beyond my time as a student. The daily interaction with people from the most diverse cultures greatly broadened my horizons and positively changed my perspective on many aspects of life.

On a personal level, I grew a lot during this period. I would even recommend a semester abroad to introverted people — it offers a unique chance to push yourself beyond your limits. If not abroad, then when? You automatically leave your comfort zone, get to know yourself in a completely new way, and gain a tremendous amount of self-confidence and openness.

The university, the Asia Pacific University, made this process significantly easier, acting as a central “connect point.” Since the university consists mostly of international students, everyone is in a similar situation: far from home, in a completely new city, yet with the same goal—to meet new people and build a temporary new home. At APU, everyone is in the same boat, and this strengthened the sense of community and made it easier to explore Kuala Lumpur together and settle in. I therefore highly recommend taking full advantage of all the activities APU offers!

My perspective on my studies and future career also changed significantly during this time. The program and the international environment shaped me so much that I decided to first complete my master’s degree in Germany and then return to Malaysia to finish my MBA. An additional degree in Malaysia opens up international opportunities and broadens my professional prospects, as my goal is to become self-employed and build more international connections.
