When studying at UC Berkeley Extension you need to have the F-1 visa, which is the student visa.Students who are admitted will receive a Form I-20 that is used to apply for the F-1 Visa at a U.S. embassy in their home country. Internships:
If you choose to study with us for two semesters in the Berkeley Haas Global Access Program, you become eligible for an opportunity to put your newly learned skills and knowledge to practical use by applying for Optional Practical Training, more commonly known as OPT.OPT is a temporary, 12-month work authorization in the United States, permitting you to stay an additional 12 months after your academic program ends to complete paid work. If you decide on this combined educational and work experience option, you should expect to be in the U.S. for approximately two years in total.

*A waiver for the English proficiency requirement can be made in the following circumstances:
1. One year of full-time university level instruction entirely in the English language
2. Successful completion of a university-level program in a country where English is the official

3. The student is from a country on the exempt list
Transcripts and credentials should reflect any programs that the student completed entirely in English.
Our admissions committee will assess all documentation and inform students if additional items are
needed (E.g. Interview, test score, letter, etc.).
**Instructions to Request an English-Language Assessment
If a student does not meet any of the above criteria they have the opportunity to undergo an
English-Language assessment through our department. If you are interested in this option students must
select, “I would like to request an English interview” in their application.
Orientation:
Orientation is your chance to meet your classmates and advisers, learn about program requirements, receive important information to help you succeed and start making friendships with your fellow students.Your attendance at orientation is mandatory. The date and time for your orientation will be sent to you via email. If you are unable to attend orientation, please contact your program adviser as soon as possible.

The closest airports to Berkeley are San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport (OAK). ISS does not provide transportation for students to and from local airports, however we suggest you consider the following transportation services. All prices are estimates and vary based on time, route and number of passengers.Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART): BART is the local metro/subway public transportation system and has stations at both SFO and OAK. You will need to plan additional transportation to get from the BART station to your housing. Tickets are available for purchase at any BART station.
Airport Shuttle: Van pick-up services leave from major airports and will take you from the airport directly to your housing. There are many different companies and you can shop around for the best price. Reserve via their website ahead of time.
Ride-sharing Apps (such as Lyft or Uber): Mobile phone applications require you to download their app to access services. You need Wifi or cell service to use them and payment is processed directly from your phone.
Housing On-Campus:
Dormitories are recommended if you want a structured atmosphere with opportunities to meet new people through planned activities. Meals are sometimes provided, and you will likely have a roommate who is not a UC Berkeley Extension international student. The estimated costs for living expenses per semester are $11,250 for 5 months.Housing Off-Campus:
Apartments are recommended if you want to be more independent or prefer a quieter atmosphere for studying.A homestay is a private room in a local family home, and homestay opportunities are available in San Francisco, Berkeley and nearby areas. Features include meal options, Wi-Fi, laundry, use of family areas and English spoken in homes. We recommend using one of the homestay programs listed at Universal Student Housing.
