usVisa Issuance in the USA – Current Information for Students

Current Developments and News (As of: June 2025)

In recent months, there have been several political adjustments and discussions in the USA related to the issuance of student visas (F-1/J-1). These developments have caused uncertainty for many prospective exchange students in Germany – especially since interview appointments for visa applications are currently limited or not available at all.

Important: There is no reason to panic. These situations are not unusual and can also arise from political processes, staffing shortages, or seasonal demand peaks. Such delays have occurred in the past – and they have always been resolved. We are in continuous communication with our partner universities in the USA and with the responsible US consulates in Germany. Based on the current situation, we assume that new interview appointments for students will be released in the foreseeable future. Many universities in the USA are showing great understanding and are offering flexible deadlines or additional support in some cases.

What you can do now:

  • Prepare your documents completely so that you can react immediately when new appointments are released.
  • Apply for your I-20 or DS-2019 document early, as it is a prerequisite for the visa application.
  • Follow our updates on this page. We summarize all relevant developments comprehensibly and currently – with a special focus on the needs and experiences of German students.

May 2025 – Temporary Suspension of Visa Interviews Worldwide

The US Department of State has suspended new appointments for student visa interviews worldwide (Source: WSJ).

What does this mean for German students?
Students who currently wish to apply for a US student visa may not receive new appointments at the US consulates in Germany for several weeks. This can lead to delays in the schedule.

  • Recommendation: Prepare all documents (especially the I-20/DS-2019 and proof of financial support) completely. Submit the DS-160 form online as soon as you have received your I-20/DS-2019.
  • Check the websites of the US consulates (Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich) for available interview appointments daily and at different times. New slots are often released without prior notice.
  • Find out about possible interview waiver programs (postal application without a personal interview) if you have previously had a US visa. The criteria for this are strict.
  • Many universities actively support appointment scheduling or can intervene in case of bottlenecks – keep your host university informed.
  • Plan for buffer times and only book flights after receiving the visa.

May 2025 – Use of AI to Review Social Media Profiles

The US government is using artificial intelligence as part of the “Catch and Revoke” initiative to analyze the social media activities of international students (Source: Wikipedia). Social media profiles from the last five years must be declared in the DS-160 form.

What does this mean for German students?
Public statements on social networks can play a role in visa decisions.

  • Recommendation: Review your public profiles (Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc.) for content that could be misinterpreted or controversial. This also applies to shared content or likes.
  • Be aware that comments in German can also be analyzed.
  • Caution is advised, especially with politically sensitive topics (e.g., international conflicts, US domestic policy). A politically neutral and professional online presence is advantageous.
  • Review your privacy settings. Content visible only to friends is generally less problematic, but there is no guarantee.
  • Do not delete profiles shortly before submitting your application, as this could arouse suspicion. Be honest in your DS-160 form.

May 2025 – Stricter Regulations for Chinese STEM Students

Visas for Chinese students in security-relevant fields of study (STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) are being increasingly scrutinized and sometimes revoked (Source: Financial Times).

What does this mean for German students?
This specific regulation primarily affects Chinese citizens and has no direct negative impact on German STEM students.

  • On the contrary: Many US universities actively recruit European and especially German applicants in technology and engineering sciences to promote diversity and international research collaborations.
  • German students in STEM fields continue to be very welcome in the USA.
  • Nevertheless, it is advisable to be able to clearly present your academic goals and the relevance of your studies in the USA during the visa interview.

April 2025 – New Executive Orders on Visa Revocations for "Antisemitic" Statements

Under Executive Order 14188, visas can be revoked if students make public antisemitic statements – the definition of antisemitism can follow the US interpretation, which may be based on, for example, the IHRA definition (Source: Wikipedia).

What does this mean for German students?
Freedom of speech is a valuable asset, but in the USA, there are limits, especially in the context of visa regulations.

  • Recommendation: Familiarize yourself with the US definition and perception of antisemitism. This may differ from the debate in Germany.
  • Be particularly sensitive and respectful in public statements, discussions on campus, or on social media concerning the Middle East conflict or Jewish life.
  • Critical political opinions considered legitimate in Germany might be interpreted differently in the USA and, in the worst case, have visa consequences.
  • This applies to activities in the USA as well as online postings made from Germany.
  • When in doubt: Less is more. Focus on your studies and intercultural exchange.

March 2025 – Extended Post-Study Stay (OPT)

The USA allows international graduates an extended stay after their studies to gain practical work experience under the "Optional Practical Training" (OPT) program (Source: edu4world).

What does this mean for German students?
This is a very positive development and a great advantage of studying in the USA!

  • After successfully completing their studies (Bachelor, Master, PhD), German students with an F-1 visa can apply for a work permit in the USA:
    • Up to 12 months for most fields of study.
    • Up to 36 months (12 months initial + 24 months STEM Extension) for graduates in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
  • OPT offers the chance to gain valuable work experience in the USA, apply specialized knowledge, and expand one's professional network.
  • The work must be directly related to the field of study.
  • This is a clear advantage over many other study destinations and can significantly improve career prospects.
  • Inquire early at your US university about the exact OPT application procedures.
