Spending a quarter abroad at UC San Diego (UCSD) was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made – both academically and personally. I organized the entire experience through World of Students, and without their help (special thanks to Julia!), I probably wouldn’t have made it happen. They supported me throughout the application, course selection, visa process (F1), and financial planning. Their guidance made the complex U.S. procedures manageable.

As a cooperative system (duales Studium) student in Germany, timing was everything. I had to align my study abroad with my practical phase to avoid delaying my studies. UCSD was one of the few universities operating on a quarter system, which made this possible. The application ran through UCSD’s Extension Program.

Academic Structure at UCSD

Course selection was different than expected. I submitted a list of 15 preferred courses, but actual enrollment was only confirmed after arriving in San Diego. During the first three weeks, we were allowed to attend various classes and apply individually, with final approval depending on the department or professor. Some departments were stricter than others – psychology, for example, rejected my application due to a lack of prerequisites.

Unfortunately, business management courses were completely off-limits to international students, which even the advisors couldn’t explain. If you’re aiming for management-specific content, UCSD might not be the right choice.

The study system in the U.S. is very different from Germany. Instead of one final exam, there were weekly assignments, midterms, class participation, presentations, and final projects. Attendance was mandatory and graded. In Digital Marketing, for example, we gradually built a complete marketing strategy through weekly tasks – which meant the final project was almost done by the time it was due. If you stay focused and always participate during the lecture you can score all points and receive an A+ for most of the courses.

Living in San Diego

My girlfriend and I stayed in an Airbnb in La Jolla Cove, directly by the ocean at the famous home of the sea lions and the most photographed beaches in Southern California. Not cheap, but worth every cent. Living there allowed us to fully embrace the San Diego lifestyle – surfing, hiking, gym workouts, soccer, basketball, pilates, spontaneous trips to LA or Vegas, and exploring different neighborhoods like the party district Pacific Beach, Little Italy, Coronado Island and Downtown. I’d usually be in or by the ocean 3–4 times a week.

A key tip for anyone going to San Diego:

Rent your car from Dirt Cheap Car Rental. The name says it all – don’t expect a luxury vehicle. Ours had 200,000 miles, stains on the seats, and a constantly lit tire pressure warning. But it was reliable, cheap, and came with insurance and student discounts. We paid €2,000 total for three months (split between two people: €333 a month). The service was super friendly, maintenance was easy (monthly check-ups included), and with their “Travel Plan 1”, we had enough mileage to drive all over Southern California.

One major advantage of studying in San Diego: it’s the shortest and most convenient U.S. connection to Hawaii. We took full advantage of that at the end of the quarter. We flew from San Diego to O'ahu and explored the island from top to bottom – Waikiki Beach, North Shore, and the Kualoa Ranch. It was exactly what you imagine Hawaii to be: perfect beaches, stunning nature, and total paradise. After a few days, we flew to Maui, which was even more breathtaking. We experienced the Road to Hana, took an unforgettable helicopter tour, and saw the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever set foot on. The highlight: standing above the clouds on top of Haleakalā Mountain – absolutely surreal.

Social Life & Campus Culture

Campus life at UCSD is academically strong but socially limited. Compared to other UCs (especially UC Santa Barbara), it has a reputation for being “dead” when it comes to parties. We noticed this quickly – there were student clubs and Greek life, but as short-term internationals, we weren’t really included. Instead, we joined parties at San Diego State University, which has a much livelier social scene and even international-themed frat events.

The UCSD Extended Studies Office made up for this by offering activities like beach bonfires, sports events, and sailing or kayaking trips at Mission Beach. These were great for networking and connecting with other international students.

Healthcare & Insurance

I injured myself while jogging and had to go through multiple check-ups – X-rays, MRI, orthopedics, and physical therapy. The included health insurance (worth $700) covered everything. Without it, I would’ve paid more than $6,000 out-of-pocket. So while the total fee of $9,200 (including tuition and insurance) sounds expensive, it paid off.

Final Thoughts

UCSD is expensive and selective, but academically outstanding – especially in STEM and research. For psychology, biology, chemistry, and similar fields, it’s a great place. For business and management, not so much if you are an international student.

My stay wasn’t about earning credits. I didn’t need the courses for my German degree, so I could focus on learning and personal growth. For those who need credit recognition, make sure your home university accepts the courses – and that UCSD offers what you need.

I used the opportunity to explore future options – I visited other universities like the University of San Francisco, joined a course, and spoke with program directors. Now I’m planning to return to the U.S. for my master’s degree in Sport Management at USF.

In summary

12 out of 10! I’d do it again in a heartbeat. San Diego, often called America’s Finest City, truly live up to the name. It is one of the most livable cities I’ve ever been to – open, safe, friendly, and full of opportunities. I felt at home right away and I miss the city since I boarded the plane back to Germany. UCSD challenged me intellectually, but also showed me where I want to go next.

Als ich in San Diego angekommen bin, hatte ich erstmal einen kleinen Kulturschock, da dies mein erster Auslandsaufenthalt war und ich gezwungen war, Englisch zu reden. Aber nach einer kleinen Weile kommt man da sehr schnell rein und die Sprachbarriere ist hier sehr schnell geknackt. Als dann das Semester los ging, kann ich mit Sicherheit und Zuversicht sagen, dass ab dann die beste Zeit meines lebens begonnen hat. Man steht morgens auf, macht sich ein simples Frühstück und nimmt den Bus vom Apartment zum Campus. Aufm weg zur Vorlesung sieht man dann auf der einen Seite die Geisel library und auf der anderen Seite sieht man einen kleinen Hauch von Pazifik. Es war wie ein Traum der in Erfüllung gegangen ist, obwohl ich nur vorerst am Campus durchgelaufen bin. Die Vorlesungen selbst sind generell lockerer als in Deutschland, aber da wir keine Muttersprachler sind, habe ich mich persönlich ein bisschen am Anfang schwer getan. Der Campus ist sehr schön mit allem was man braucht. Aber die Freizeit ist das Highlight von dem Auslandssemester gewesen. Man macht mit seinen Freunden aus, in welche Bar man abends in Pacific Beach (PB) hingeht, oder ob man nach der Vorlesung surfen in La Jolla beach geht oder andere Aktivitäten unternimmt z.b Sea World in San Diego oder vergleichbares. Die Bars und Clubs in San Diego sind sehr gut. Hier empfehle ich das Moonshine oder das Fire House. Man kann ebenfalls, wenn man nicht in Bars oder Clubs hingeht, ein Lagerfeuer am Stand machen an bestimmten Plätzen. Die Luft ist sehr rein und die Gegend ist sehr schön, wie im Bilderbuch. Wenn man im Strand in La Jolla oder in Paficic Beach rumläuft, kann man Seelöwen, möven und wenn man zur richtigen Saison dort ist, hat man sogar die Möglichkeit, Wale zu sehen, denn diese kommen wenn man viel Glück hat, näher an das Ufer und man kann sie von der Ferne sehen. Eines habe ich jedoch nicht beachtet oder unterschätzt, und zwar die Lebenserhaltungskosten sollten hoch sein, das war mir schon klar, aber dass sie so hoch wären, hat meinen Rahmen teilweise gesprengt. Zukünftige schüler sollten hier lieber mehr Puffer beiseite haben, als eine Estimation zu machen, wieviel sie mindestens zu benötigen und nur knappe finanzielle Resourcen zu besorgen.

Zu WorldOfStudents: Die Beratung und Betreuung seitens World of Students war sehr gut. Die Unterlagen bzw. Informationen Seitens der Partneruniversität wurde uns rechtzeitig weitergeleitet und es wurde uns auch zeitnah, falls es fragen gab, per mail geantwortet. Ebenfalls haben die Betreuer Zoom-Meetings angeboten, die uns mit der Vorbereitung geholfen haben, wodurch wir ohne Probleme unser Auslandssemester antreten konnten. Hierfür bin ich sehr dankbar und würde World of Students jedem weiterempfehlen! Fazit: Ich bereue es keinesfalls, dieses Auslandssemester angetreten zu sein. Es war die Zeit meines lebens und ich werde für immer ein Platz in meinem Herzen für San Diego haben.

Als ich mein Auslandssemester angetreten bin, war ich begeistert. Die Stadt San Diego hat sich in nur wenigen Tagen zu meiner absoluten Lieblingsstadt entwickelt. Die Menschen, das Wetter, das Meer und die Palmen... All das zusammen haben der Stadt Magie verleiht. Die UC San Diego liegt in dem Viertel La Jolla, ein etwas teureres Viertel im Norden San Diegos. Viele Studenten haben sich aus diesem Grund für eine uninahe Unterkunft entschieden. Ich habe mir mit ein paar anderen internationalen Studenten ein großes Haus in dem Viertel Pacific Beach gemietet und das war die beste Entscheidung. Klar, wir brauchten circa 45 Minuten mit dem Bus zur Uni. Aber im Gegenzug hatten wir alle Clubs, Restaurants und Shops direkt vor der Haustür. Das Studentenleben spielt sich nämlich größtenteils dort ab. Da die meisten Kurse an der Uni sowieso asynchrone Vorlesungen hatten, musste jeder von uns nur 1x pro Woche an den Campus fahren. Ich würde es immer wieder genauso machen.

Auch das Studentenleben war für uns alle sehr angenehm. Man hatte zwar unter der Woche etwas mehr Stress, da immer Essays oder Hausaufgaben zu erledigen waren. Jedoch waren die meisten Kurse vom Niveau her definitiv machbar. Das einzige Drama ist die Kurswahl in der ersten zwei Wochen. Man muss sich in alle gewünschten Kurse eintragen und die Wartelisten sind teilweise sehr lang. Die ersten zwei Wochen muss man somit alle Kurse besuchen ohne zu wissen, ob man es überhaupt am Ende der zwei Wochen in den Kurs schafft. Aber wenn dieser Stress erstmal geschafft ist, wird es entspannter. Ich würde es jedem/r empfehlen, die Kurse gut zu timen. Am besten man belegt Kurse von Dienstag bis Donnerstag. Somit hat man ein verlängertes Wochenende, um andere Orte zu besuchen. Los Angeles, Tijuana (Mexiko), etliche Nationalparks oder Santa Barbara sind nicht weg weit und absolut sehenswert. Wer gerne mal das Surfen ausprobieren wollte, der sollte die Chance in San Diego definitiv nutzen. San Diego ist der perfekte Surfspot, da dort immer ein perfekter Wellengang herrscht. Was man aber nicht vergessen sollte ist, dass der Pazifik leider nicht warm ist. Also Frostbeulen werden keine stundenlangen Badesessions machen können. Das Wetter in San Diego ist aber auch sehr angenehm, dass man es ohne eine Abkühlung auch gut aushalten kann. Es geht immer ein kleiner Wind und die Luft ist ganz angenehm. Abends wird es jedoch sehr kühl, also unbedingt auch an etwas dickere Kleidung denken. Alles in allem hatte ich die beste Zeit meines Lebens an der UC San Diego, habe mich in die Stadt verliebt und etliche internationale Freunde kennengelernt. Definitiv eine Chance, die man nutzen sollte, wenn man kann!
